Community and DeKalb School System Information

Help for Haiti - Just in from DCSS - Please help if you can.
As you well know, the tragedy in Haiti continues to affect the lives of so many across
the globe as the effects of the earthquake have been widespread. Because DeKalb County is one of the
south’s most diverse counties and is home to numerous Haitian-Americans, many of our own community
members have lost loved ones in the devastation.
DeKalb County School System, through the Department of Support Services, has teamed up with a local non-profit called
ServeHAITI* to provide assistance to the people of Haiti as they rebuild. Beginning next week and through Friday,
February 26, DCSS will collect much-needed items for ServeHAITI’s relief efforts. All DCSS schools, centers and
administrative buildings will serve as collection sites.
We are asking DCSS employees, students, parents and the broader DeKalb County community to donate any of the items
listed below (all are safe for students to bring into school). We also ask that you help spread the word to your
co-workers, students, parents and friends.
Adhesive bandages (band-aids) – assorted sizes
Sterile gauze pads (regular or non-stick)
Gauze/elastic tape
Alcohol wipes
Cotton swabs
Q-tips
Exam gloves (latex or non-latex)
Saline solution
Aloe vera lotion
Antiseptic towelettes
Vaseline
Due to distribution restrictions, we can only collect these or similar items and are unable to accept
items such as food, water or clothing.
If you would like to donate any of these items, please place them in the collection boxes marked “Haiti Relief”
located in your building by Friday, February 26.
We understand that many schools, centers and departments may have already undertaken their own fundraising drives for Haiti.
We applaud your efforts and ask that you continue with your plans. Our intent with this system-wide drive is not supplant
existing efforts, just to supplement them.
Thank you in advance for your contributions to this relief effort. *For more than ten years, ServeHAITI’s mission has been to increase the quality of life for Haitians by improving access to healthcare, education, economic opportunities, clean drinking water, and nutritious food. The non-profit’s ultimate goal is to help alleviate unnecessary human suffering in this impoverished country. For more information about ServeHAITI, please visit their website: http://www.servehaiti.org/ |
