Who is that "whiskery"
fellow?

Name the Briarlake
Beaver! We all know
him. We have all worn t-shirts with his face on
them or proudly displayed him on a car magnet or a
bumper sticker or a car window. But we do not know
his name! A creative Briarlake student will
have the opportunity to come up with a name for our
furry, bucktoothed mascot and will win a prize for doing
so. You'll hear more next week, but we will be
accepting proposed names for the beaver from all
students. Our committee will then narrow it down
to five (5) names. We will hold a school wide
election and the winning name (and namer!) will be
announced at the ice cream social on September 15,
2009. So put your beaver hats on and start
thinking!
Thank you to Susan
Gouinlock for leading
this effort! | |

Kudos
Our own Ms. Diana Berry, librarian,
was chosen to be a member of the selection committee for
the National Children's Book Award.
Congratulations! |
| "Thank You" goes
to:
Dana Gavrielides and
Lynn Hale, our school office gurus, for making the
"back to school" transition smooth for us all!
The Parent Coffee was a
huge success! While enjoying a cup-of-joe parents
and families enjoyed making new friends and reuniting
with old. It was great to see the support of
established families given to new families. We are
lucky to have such a caring school. Thank you to
Mary Margaret Neal for pulling off, yet another
hospitable event!
The first day of school offered
another opportunity for familes who missed Open
House to register and purchase school
supplies. Thank you to Geoff Boyer, Irenea
Seufert, and Tonya Roberts for again, being
willing to jump in and
help. |

Academic Bowl
A message from Ms.
Berry:
I'll be the coach of the Briarlake Academic Bowl
Team. (Each school can only have 1 team of up to 10 5th
grade students.) Next week, students will let me know if
they are interested in trying out for the team. If there
are a lot of interested students, they will take a
general knowledge written test, then compete against
each other for a place on the team. The
Bowl will be held on November 14th at Avondale Middle
School. The team will be comprised of up to 10 5th
graders. Team selection will be made from interested
students who demonstrate the greatest ability to respond
correctly to questions from a range of subjects,
including, but not limited to, current affairs, math,
science, literature, history and geography.
I'm sure that we will have an exceptional
team.
**If
interested contact Ms.
Berry

Girls on the
Run
A Briarcliff
Woods Girls On the Run chapter, will be started
this fall. GOTR, under the guidance of Girls On The
Run International, is a non-profit organization
started in 1996 with chapters in over 150 cities across
North Amercia. Our mission is to educate and prepare
girls (3rd-5th graders) for a lifetime of self-respect
and healthy living. It is a running/youth
development sports program that would be delivered
by four local moms that have been trained as
official GOTR coaches. The GOTR
program would meet for 1.5 hours, two times a week for
10 weeks, on Tuesdays, 4-5:30 pm and Sundays, 2-3:30 pm
starting on September 15th, 2009. The meetings will be
held at Briarcliff Woods Beach Club, 1830 Morris
Landers Road, Atlanta, GA 30345. Our ultimate
goal is to build their confidence &
self-respect and teach them how to keep a healthy body
image, especially as they enter into middle school and
their teen-aged years. Fall
Registration OPENS online on August 24, 2009 @ 9am
at www.girlsontherunatlanta.org.

BOX TOPS:
Continue clipping Box
Tops. Look for Box Tops on many different
products, not just food.
Briarlake made over $2000 in
Box Tops last year! That's a lot of
money for such little effort.
THANK YOU TO: David Flanagan
and Candace Randall for chairing our Box Top
initiative. You are great
clippers! |
| BEAVER BULLETIN:
Our first edition of the new school
year will be available on-line next week at
briarlakepta.org.
Thanks to Melissa Beaupierre for all
her editing
talents! |
