CULTURAL ARTS PROGRAM
Grades 3-5 will enjoy the FIG Newton program with Ron Anglin on Thursday, December 17th at 8:30 am.
Greetings Briarlake Families,
Spirit Night is TONIGHT!  Join us for Beaver Spirit at Stevi-Bs!!   See below for who gets free pizza.

Please support our school support staff this holiday season.  Our support staff provides invaluable assistance that often times is not on their job description.  For example, Mr. Nunn transported and returned all the risers to the church for our holiday program...that was definitely not his job.  Let's show them all how much we appreciate their kindness!  Details below.

Join True Blue Schools today to earn easy and fast money for our PTA!  See below.

Our Lost and Found rack is crazy!  Please claim lost and found items before December 11.  All unclaimed items will be donated to boys and girls at a school in need.

Our November Beaver Bulletin is located on the home page of the Briarlake PTA Website.
Spirit Night--Dec. 10--TONIGHT!

Make sure to mention you are with Briarlake School!!!
Wear your sticker to the restaurant and get 2 free game tokens!

For this first spirit night only, all Briarlake faculty and staff will be treated to a FREE pizza buffet (drink excluded).  Just give them your name at the register.

With the holidays around the corner, treat yourself to a night off!

We hope to see you there!
News from the Front Office
If your child is absent from school (either excused or unexcused) you do NOT need to call the front office.  Simply send a note to school upon your child's return, if it is excused.  If the absence is unexcused (vacation) you do not need to send a note to school.
Check the Briarlake Handbook at the link above  for details about absences.
Holiday Collection
It's that time of year again! We are collecting donations for a monetary gift for our support staff - custodial and lunchroom employees. We would like to show them how much we appreciate them and the jobs that they do each day to keep our school in tip top shape and feed our children!
Please consider making a donation. You may send it in with your child in an envelope marked "Holiday Collection". Checks should be made payable to Briarlake PTA.
The deadline is December 11th. Thank you!
Easy Fundraising Opportunity
If you are a Georgia Natural Gas customer, please consider registering for their True Blue Schools program.  It really is an easy and quick way to bring in "free" money for our school and your child's educational opportunities.  Simply connect to the link below and sign up!  IT'S VERY FAST!  Briarlake will receive $100 a year from each GNG customer.  That's a lot of money!  And it really adds up.    You just need your GNG account number.  Remember the more participants, the more money for our school!!!
If you already participate in this program, thank you so much!

USED BOOK SALE  - February 5-6th
Clean out those book shelves over the holidays and donate to the Briarlake Used Book Sale.  We will begin collecting books, dvd's and video games in January. Additional information coming early  next year!

New Planners for all 2nd-5th graders
You may have noticed that your child's school planner is not holding up very well this year.  Our planner distributor used a cheaper quality paper unbeknownst to us. We were able to negotiate replacement planners for your child for the second semester.  They will be sent home before the Holiday break.  Live and learn we say...

Planners going home this week. Look for them in your child's bookbag.
Monarchs Across Georgia:  Books needed
Monarchs Across Georgia: Donations needed for books

As some of you know, I (Mrs. Spencer) will be heading to Michoacan, Mexico in February to visit the Monarchs overwintering in the Transvolcanic Mountains of Mexico.  These incredible insects migrate over 2,000 miles from the southern borders of Canada  and from all parts east of the Rocky Mountains to Mexico.  While in Mexico, our group will visit schools in rural Mexico with limited resources.  We need your support to meet our goal of bringing elementary-level books written in Spanish to the students who are taking care of the Monarch butterflies in Mexico.

Please consider making a donation to the Environmental Education Alliance (EEA) designating it to the "Mexico Book Project". Your check can be sent to school and given to Mrs. Spencer before school lets out for winter vacation or to the address below between December 18-31.  You may also receive a letter acknowledging your tax-deductable donation if requested.

As a reference, books generally cost about $5.00 in American currency.  Your gift will make it possible for us to pre-order books through Scholastic Mexico and they will ship them to our hotel in Morelia so that we may deliver them to the students during our visit.
In appreciation for your donation, a bookplate with your name will be attached to the inside cover of each book.  We will also recognize each donor by sending you a certificate and publishing your name on the website at www.monarchsacrossga.org.  if requested.  The deadline is December 31, 2009.  Please mail checks after December 18th to:

Mexico Book Project c/o Trecia Neal
2433 Kingscliff Dr. NE
Atlanta, GA 30345.

A donation form will go home in the Friday courier envelopes.

Thank you for your support.
Stephanie Spencer, first grade teacher
Green Team
The Green Team is thankful for so many things.  We have such a great school.  Our team is especially proud of our students.  We are always hearing stories from the children about the many ways they take care of the earth.  It is wonderful to hear.  One group that deserves much recognition is Mr. Lunde and his recycling team.  These students collect paper from the entire building everyday.  They then take this paper and roll it  down to the big dumpster in the parking lot and empty it there. This is a very big job.  It is amazing how much paper is collected in a week.  Our Green Team wants to give recognition to every one of you.  We Thank You Briarlake's Paper Recycling Team!

Pictures
All picture order forms should be turned in by now. Lifetouch will make one more pick up this Friday the 11th for late order forms; this will be the very last opportunity to turn in order forms for any pictures.

Some of you did not receive your individual packages or class pictures, please email me with concerns. I will be sending the extra class pictures that I have had at home back to Lifetouch as well this Friday so Thurs. will be the last day to email me about class pictures. Please note that the pictures from the second picture day will probably not be in by the Winter Break. I will do what I can to speed this process but I think they need 2-3 weeks to process orders so it will be very close.

If you told me of a problem or concern at school regarding pictures, please send me an email because I was not able to write anything down while running through school. There was at least one mom who spoke to me in the office about a missing individuals package so please email me.

From Mrs. Crabtree
Mrs. Crabtree, cafeteria manager, continues to recover at home after an extended illness.  Read the following from Mrs. Crabtree:
"My plan & goal is to return after the winter break!!!  My family & I once again wanted to thank everyone there at Briarlake for their thoughts & prayers!
As I have laid here thru the months reading the different Beaver bulletin's - it really does make one appreciate so much and definitely at this time thru the holidays!  Having one's good health is a blessing, but having the love and support of family & friends and so many others when your health is challenged is an amazing experience in itself!!  Words do not accurately express how so many have helped me get thru this very difficult situation and what it has meant to me!!
Since I won't be able to return until after the holiday's I would like to go ahead and wish you all a safe & happy holiday season and a Happy New Year!  I truly am looking forward to getting back to work & the Briarlake family!  Until then take care!"

We miss you Mrs. Crabtree.  Please keep Mrs. Crabtree in your hearts.

Flu Shots available at Lakeside
Lakeside's Partner in Education, North Atlanta Urgent Care (NAUC), has received a large shipment of H1N1 immunizations.  They will be at Lakeside this Friday afternoon, December 11th, from 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. to immunize Lakeside families and members of the community.  Due to traffic and parking concerns at dismissal, we recommend that community members arrive after 3:45 p.m. to get their shots.

NAUC can give the immunization to anyone over 6 months of age.  Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to sign the consent form.

The cost is $20/shot.  You can pay for the immunizations at Lakeside by cash or check.

North Atlanta Urgent Care currently has a limited number of seasonal flu vaccines available as well.  If they have any left Friday, they will bring them to Lakeside.  The cost is $25.

NAUC will also have H1N1 and seasonal flu immunizations available at their office at 2700 Clairmont Road any time this weekend or during the week.   They invite the Lakeside community to come by their office before Friday to get flu shots-especially if you are interested in the seasonal flu shot, since those quantities are limited.
Their hours are:  Monday - Thursday: 9AM - 8PM, Friday: 9AM - 7PM; and Saturday & Sunday 10AM - 6PM.  Their phone number is 404-327-8744 if you have additional questions or want to find out if they still have seasonal flu shots.
Remember:  Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to sign the consent form.

Dec. !0--6:30 pm--Greenspace Acquisition Strategy meeting

On December 10th, DeKalb County officials will update the public about the county greenspace program at a forum next week. Please read below and attend the meeting to underscore our need for greenspace resources in District 2. The county has used bond money to buy and improve land for parks and recreation, acquiring more than 3,000 acres since 2001, according to the office of County CEO Burrell Ellis. Little of this land was acquired in District 2.
Officials will discuss the program at 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 10 at the Maloof Auditorium, 1300 Commerce Dr. in Decatur. For more information, call the County Parks Bond and Greenspace Office at 404-371-2082 or http://web.co.dekalb.ga.us/Greenspace/default.asp http://web.co.dekalb.ga.us/Greenspace/default.asp

It is important that District 2 residents attend the meeting to better understand current deficiencies in our area, and the County's options for correcting them.  I described imbalance in previous use of greenspace funding in a July Update http://www.commissionerrader.com/issues/issue40.html

For those of you who are interested in the possibility of the county turning the Cathey property (wooded lot on Briarlake Rd) into a park, this is a must attend meeting.

I have spoken with Jeff Rader, and he is very open to the idea of putting in a park. The county also has money right now. For those of you who don't know, the Cathey property is the undeveloped woods along Amberwood and Briarlake. Please attend and make your views known.
