| Greetings
Briarlake Families, |
Please take time to read our
November Beaver Bulletin located on the home
page of the Briarlake PTA
Website. Friday, November 20th is School
Crossing Guard Appreciation Day! This day is
designed to recognize the work crossing guards do each
day to keep our school children safe when crossing busy
streets. We dedicate this day to the group of
professionals who are committed to helping children
safely across our busy streets. It is a tough job, as
School Crossing Guards must stand out in all kinds of
weather; manage aggressive drivers, or drivers who won't
stop for them. We are extremely proud of our School
Crossing Guards, and highly commend them for their
continued dedication and commitment to the safety and
well-being of our school children.
Ms. Addie Hayes is our crossing guard on LaVista
and Ms. Celeste Johnson is our guard on Silvastone.
Take a moment to thank them this week!

PTA Budget and update |
|
We wanted to inform you
of some of the changes we will be making based on the
review of the bylaws and policies and procedures.
If you are working
within a committee, your committee chair is the one who
is fiscally responsible for the committee's
expenses. If the committee has a line item, you MUST
remain within the limits of your budget. Those of you
who do not have a line item need to request
funding BEFORE you spend money. If you
do have a line item, your budgets are pre-determined and
expenses that exceed your budget will not be reimbursed.
We are no longer going to be able to accept
handwritten receipts for reimbursement. Please allow
at least 2 weeks for a reimbursement check once you have
turned in your request. Remember that we are all
volunteers and we all have other responsibilities.
Each request for funding must be accompanied by a
check request form. Thank you for your help in
keeping within the budget. The budget is very tight and
we are not going to be able to cover expenses if we do
not hold everyone responsible for their spending.
Thank you to
everyone who took the time to come to the very
productive PTA meeting Tuesday night. We enjoyed a
lively discussion about our budget which brought clarity
and opportunities for positive change. We look
forward to working more closely with our Committee
Chairs to create budgets for the Fall Festival, Sally
Foster and The Spring Gala. Micki Gulley,
treasurer, gave us all a lesson in basic accounting
principles, which was very informative. Thank you
Micki, for all your hard work "accounting" for every
penny! Planning Committee to lead us on an effective
and straight path. We all engaged in an open
discussion of improving attendance at the
meetings. One suggestion was to split the PTA
meetings and our Family Events, to facilitate effective
and succinct PTA business meetings. Another
suggestion was to offer FOOD...we are working on
this! Jessica White, secretary, will have our
minutes ready for posting after the Thanksgiving
holiday.
We will not have a PTA
meeting in December. A special thank you to Mrs. Aaron,
Mrs. Elliott, Mrs.Rodriguez, and Mrs. Norris-Brown for
staying until 7:30 and supporting our school. We very
much appreciate your time.
Sarah and
Laurie

| Pictures |
|
Hopefully everyone
has received their pictures.
All CLASS PICTURES should be in except for Mrs. Coker's
class. Her name was spelled wrong on the bottom so those
should be along by the end of the week. If you paid for and
did not receive a class picture or if you want to
purchase one now for $12, I have a few extras. If you need a
class picture, please contact me because I have the extras,
not Lifetouch. Please do not put these requests in
the Lifetouch box.
Those who got INDIVIDUAL PICTURES taken on the first
picture day should have gotten their proofs, ordered and
gotten their pictures.
Those who got individual picture RETAKES should have
received their proofs. Order forms to order pictures from
proofs are due by Tuesday, the 24th. There will be a
collection box in the front office and I will have it on the
check-in table for the Thanksgiving lunches. You can also
send order forms in your child's backpack.
Please only put individual picture order
forms in the Lifetouch box. Send requests for class
pictures to me because I have the extras.
Finally, I want to know of any students who MISSED
BOTH PICTURE DAYS so we can get a picture for the
yearbook.
Thank you,

STORE |
|
Please join us in thanking
Paige Fitts for her years of managing the school store - she
has done a fabulous job!
Paige is turning the store
over to Ellen Kersh so please welcome her and thank her for
stepping up to take over this position. If you would like to
help us provide this service for the children please contact
Ellen. Thank you! |

GRANTS |
|
Briarlake received 2 grants
from The Junior League of DeKalb County.
Ms. Winburn's
grant is: 'Leaping Into Learning." She received money to
purchase new leap frog machines for our kindergarten rooms.
These machines are used daily as a learning tool in
kindergarten.
Ms. Berry's grant is "Growing and
Changing." This grant funds the purchase of a complete
Butterfly School Kit - caterpillar kingdom and emergence
board, net castle, 32 live larvae and food; 2 Kamishibai
stories dealing with growing and changing; and a cd of 14
Japanese children's songs sung in Japanese and English to use
with the Kamishibai stories.
Ms. Winburn and Ms. Berry
will attend a reception for grant awardees on November 19th at
the Mary Gay House in Decatur.
A sincere thanks to The
Junior League of DeKalb County.

| Holiday
Program |
It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year"
volunteers needed! Tuesday, Dec. 1, for the Holiday
program. We need parents to corral students in the
"holding areas" at the church, until time to walk on stage and
make sure students get to the correct sitting area on
stage. You will need to arrive no later than 6:00
p.m. The show starts at 6:30. You will not
miss the program. Please email Ms. Goodwin and let
her know if you can help. She will most likely need a
"lead" parent to assist her with all the volunteers, and come
to the rehearsal at school the day of the show (12/1) to
practice. Let her know if you are able to be the "lead".
We also need a truck that can help move the risers to the
church Tuesday afternoon (between 12-2) and then transport the
risers back to school Wednesday morning. If you have a
truck and/or can help with the risers PLEASE let Laurie Hobbs
@ jhobbs9@bellsouth.net know. The program is the Tuesday
after Thanksgiving break, so it is coming
fast!

Team News |
Briarlake will continue to collect
cell phones and their chargers, headsets, and
accessories, all year long. The collection box is
near the front doors. These phones will benefit gorillas
from the Democratic Republic congo area. What
an easy way to reach out and help another part of the
world.
Recycle your used light bulbs at Home
Depot.
Ms. Berry, our librarian, is
collecting batteries all year as
well. We hope many of you are enjoying
the morning walks to school. Our safety patrols are
ready to punch a hole in your walking
cards each week. This is Week 7. Remember
to walk or bike to school at least one day each week to
get your card punched for that week so that at the end of
10 weeks we can enter your card into a raffle for a prize.
Walk to Win!
GREEN TEAM
HAPPENINGS Thank you
Green Team!
National Recycling Day was November
15th. Let's continue to celebrate
this great day all next week AND throughout the year!
There are so many recycling opportunities out there to teach
our children and help our planet. See the list below for
just a few.
Cell phones and accessories
at Briarlake to benefit gorillas
Electronics at Grady High
School - once a month
Batteries at Briarlake's
media center {now's a good time to change out those smoke
detector batteries}
Juice pouches at Briarlake's
cafeteria
Ink cartridges
at Office Depot
Mixed paper at Briarlake's
outdoor bin in parking area
Another option for recycling
those items is at DeKalb Farmer's Market.
Toys to shelters,
Goodwill, or friends
Towels to Veterinarians
Styrofoam chips to UPS
stores
Plastic grocery bags at most
grocery stores
Compost your food
scraps
Create art from trash
This list could go just on and on. Please enjoy
your recycling efforts as you educate your child about the
many benefits there are to these
activities. |
