Greetings Briarlake Beavers,
*This is a long one, but a goodie...read it all!

*Thank you to all who showed the Roberts family loving support Monday and wore green.  It's amazing what small acts of kindness can do... our hearts and prayers continue to go out to the Roberts family, and "Go Quinn, Go"! She's doing quite well.

*The rain thwarted our plans again...sorry about the  Lakeside football game.  We'll try again.

*Get well soon, Mrs. Crabtree!  Our dear cafeteria manager, has been ill for several weeks now.  Keep her in your thoughts!  We miss you Mrs. Crabtree!!

*Important Bake Sale information for all 5th graders!  Read below for details.

*ITBS Testing schedule is below.

*Carpool complaints:  Please be mindful of blocking the carpool driveway if you choose to park and exit your car before carpool begins.  If you choose to leave your car unattended before 2:00 p.m., please park single file on the left side, so that others can pass through.  Thanks!

*2 days 'til the Fall Festival.  This is our time-honored tradition brought to us by Carolyn Hansen and Angela Pilcher.  Bring friends, neighbors and smiles and welcome in the fall with us.

Quinn Roberts-- YOU make Briarlake Great!
Quinn Roberts, 2nd grader, underwent a kidney transplant on Tuesday, September 29, her 8th birthday.  She will be out of school approxaimately 4-8 weeks.  She now begins the long process of recovering.

Their story will also be featured on WXIA/11 news this week by reporter Julie Wolfe.

If your child would like to send Quinnlin a card in the coming weeks, we know that she would appreciate her school community thinking about her.  Her home address is:  2876 Guinevere Dr. NE, Atlanta, GA 30345.  How nice would it be for Quinn to get lots of real letters, cards and pictures?
If you would like to see updates on Quinnlin's surgery and progress or you want to help the family with meals, you can visit her mom's blog at www.kidneysandeyes.com.

No longer forward nor behind
I look in hope or fear;
But, grateful, take the good I find,
The best of now and here.

National Walk To School Day -- Wednesday, Oct. 7
Wednesday, October 7 plan to walk to school.  What a great way to get your day started!
There's a crispness in the air, and beautiful brilliant fall blue skies (we hope), so enjoy a moment with your children walking to school.  If you live too far away to walk all the way to school, consider parking on one of the neighborhood streets and walking some of the way.

Please mark your calendars and join the rest of the WORLD as we walk,
bike,  run,  scooter,  or dance our way to school.

Briarlake Elementary is very pleased to announce our new partnership with The Safe Routes to School Program [SRTS}.  The National SRTS is
designed to enable and encourage children, including those with
disablities,  to walk and bicycle to school; to make bicycling and
walking to school a safer and more appealing
transportation alternative; and to facilitate the planning,
develpoment,  and implementation of projects and activities that will
improve safety,  and reduce traffic,  fuel consumption and air
pollution in the vicinity of schools.

On October 7th,  each student will receive a Walking Card and zipper
pull to kick off our new walking program.  For the next 10 weeks,  the
cards are to be carried by the students when they walk or bicycle
their way to school.  The cards will then be randomly checked and a
hole will be punched in the card.  After 10 weeks the SRTS team will
hold a raffle for our card carrying walkers/bikers to win a prize.  We
hope you enjoy the glorious mornings!

Lost and Found--ready to find owners
Remember to check the Lost and Found rack in the cafeteria.  It is getting so full that in the next  few weeks we plan to donate the remaining clothes to Goodwill.

Green Team--Carpool Collection
The Green Team will collect Sally Foster boxes and electronics to recycle on  Friday,
October 16 during morning carpool.  You don't even have to get  out of your car...How easy is that?  See below for the link for acceptable items.

The Fall Festival is just about here!  What a great time to get out and enjoy the day at Briarlake.  Please stop by to help create the the best Marble Run EVER !!   Look for us outside,  near the kindergarten hall.  We'll also be selling those fabulous reusable shopping bags.  Another opportunity to create non-toxic cleaning solutions will be available as well.  Please come out and support our team while you have fun.

The following week on Oct. 7th is International Walk to School Day.  The Green Team,  Coach Cocks and the Healthy Habits Team will be there to kick off the new walking program. What a great way to start good,  clean,  healthy and inexpensive habits!

Please do not forget to collect your electronics.  We'll be collecting those items as well as your Sally Foster Boxes on October 16th,  during morning carpool.  The link for the list of items accepted is  www.decaturga.com/cgs_citysvcs_sfm_electronics.aspx

We look forward to seeing you at all of these wonderful events.

Thank you Green Team!
Healthy Habits call to action from the Georgia PTA
CHILD NUTRITION ACT AND COMPETITIVE FOODS
Info from the Georgia PTA:  The Child Nutrition Act and the Child Nutrition & Protection Act (i.e. Competitive Foods Bill) is being voted on this year.  Please support Child Nutrition Promotion and School Lunch Protection Act (S. 934), introduced by Senators Harkin and Murkowski. As you know, good nutrition is central to children's health and ability to learn. The bill calls on the U. S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to update its national school nutrition standards for foods sold outside of school meals. This includes foods sold through vending machines, school stores, and a la carte in the cafeteria. The current standards are out of date and do not reflect current concerns regarding children's diets and health.
The Georgia PTA is encouraging all members to sign the letter to Senator Chambliss (feel free to add a personal note).

Mailing addresses for Senator Chambliss' regional offices can be found at http://chambliss.senate.gov/public/index.cfm?p=RegionalOffices.

SALLY FOSTER
What fun was had by the FUR BUS riders!  The pizza parties are coming for our top class participation winners--Mrs. Johnson and Mrs. Winburn!

Our sincere gratitude is extended to Irenea Seufert and Michelle Lindner for their dedication and committment to raising money for our children and school.  We all stand with an ovation for you both.  The time you have given to all students, staff and teachers at Briarlake, and the time you have taken away from your own families and yourself, does not go unrecognized.  We salute you, and thank you!
Philip Mancusi-Ungaro  you ROCK!
Have you noticed the path leading to the cul-de-sac behind the school that many students and parents traverse before and after school?  Well, after the flooding, the path resembled the Grand Canyon.  Thank you to Mr. Mancusi-Ungaro for filling in the ravine with rocks.  We really appreciate your kindness.
Briarlake Baptist Work Day--October 4
Thanks to La Detra White, the Briarlake Baptist Church community service project will be held at Briarlake Elementary again this year!  Thank you in advance for all that you do for our school, in this project and many others throughout the year.  What a great relationship we have!
Thanks to Mrs. White for her time, energy and efforts organizing this project.
Reminders
Girl Scout troop # 25437 will be collecting eye glasses at the Fall Festival. We will have a box to collect all glasses.  They will be given to the Georgia Lions Lighthouse who provides assistance to those in need in our community by helping to pay for glasses or a visit to an eye doctor (among other programs).  The Lighthouse collects used eyeglasses (or sunglasses) for use in Operation Eye Care.  Donated glassed are washed, read and sorted by their volunteers.  They are then sent on mission trips to developing areas in the world.
Thank you,    Mrs. Francis
