NEWS
Open House: If you were unable
to attend Open House, you will find the class lists
posted on the entry door windows Friday afternoon.
All school supplies, PTA membership,
and t-shirts will be available in the cafeteria
Monday morning for those who missed Open
House.
We hope all families, new and
returning, will join us for coffee and tissues as
our "babies" start the school year. Please help to
support each other at the Welcome Coffee--Monday morning
at 8:00.
DRESS
CODE and Uniforms
Please review the new Dress
Code before the first day of school. Main
changes for us...No spaghetti straps, no flip-flops, and
shorts must be finger tip length.
Last year Briarlake participated in a
school-wide uniform survey. The majority of
parents voted against adopting a uniform policy.
Therefore, Briarlake will not endorse a uniform
policy. However, parents that choose to
dress their child in a "uniform" and adhere to the
new county dress code, are welcome to do so.
CARPOOL
We ask for
your patience the first few weeks of school as everyone
gets adjusted to a new year. Remember the carpool
line always takes a few weeks to run smoothly. A
positive attitude cures most
things! |
Thank Yous
Our New Parent Orientation helped to
welcome many new parents and families to Briarlake.
Welcome to All new students and their families! Thank
you to Lisa Moore and Whitney Blackmore for organizing
this very useful event.
Open House was a
tremendous success Wednesday, and couldn't have run so
smoothly without our many dedicated volunteers. Thank
you to Christy Van Horn, Heather Leahy, Carolyn Hansen,
Vanessa Erens, Litsa Vastakis, Michelle Lindner, Irenea
Suefert, Stephanie Byrne, Will Rigby, Jay
Bozza, Geoff Boyer, Mary Margaret Neal and Susan
Gouinlock!!! You rock!
And especially to our wonderful
teachers and staff...THANK YOU for creating a warm and
inviting school for OPEN HOUSE that allowed each
student the opportunity to meet their new teacher/s and
get geared-up for this school year. It's
going to be a great year because of you!
To Sally Elliott...WOW! What a
computer wiz. This new email system would not be
in existence without you! You are amazing...and so
patient! |
Master
Gardeners
Update
Next time you are in the school, be
sure to visit the walkway to the 3rd grade
wing and check out the beginnings of the
beautiful new Janice Benator Memorial
Garden. The sunflowers are in bloom, the Starry
Night Mural is spectacular, and the birds are
enjoying the "bird-mansion". Stay tuned for more
additions in the fall.
Coming soon: a new hardscape retaining
wall and raised flower bed in the newly planned
courtyard area (adjacent to the cafeteria).
Thank you Mrs. Spencer, Mrs.
Moody, Mrs. Elliott, Ms. DeFrancis and Stephanie
Byrne! |

SCHOOL SUPPLIES
Last month was the International Rescue Committee's
largest intake of refugees in many years, many from
Burma/Myanmar. There are approximately 140 refugee
children who will be attending school in DeKalb for the
first time this year. Their parents are expected to be
employed within 3 months of arrival, but in this
economy, many are only able to get part-time or
low-paying jobs. Since they are new to the
community, and to American schools, they don't know
where to shop for bargains, or what their children need.
(For example, Ross has nice bookbags for $4.99, and
Crayola crayons are only $.30 at Target.)
This is
an appeal to you, asking you to buy a few school
supplies for these children. You don't have to buy a
whole setup, though it would be really nice if you could
outfit 1 refugee child while you are purchasing supplies
for your child(ren), but even purchasing some of the
simple items they need would be greatly appreciated.
There will be a box in the school lobby for
donations.
