| Greetings Briarlake

Welcome back!

holiday and are all ready for the second half of the
year! We have a lot going on so make sure the dates are
on your calendar.

| Weather
Alert |
With this
winter's first chance of frozen precipitation just
around the corner, we want to remind you to stay
tuned to your local TV and radio stations for updates about
school closings/delays/early
dismissals.
For additional information about the Dekalb County School
System's emergency weather plan, please
Highlights:
Decisions about school closings/delays are normally
broadcast on local radio and television stations by 6:15
a.m.
It is the parent's responsibility to monitor local
news reports or to contact the local school to find out
whether the school system has closed in the event of severe
weather.
In the event of sudden
emergencies, parents are responsible for their
children if dismissal from schools takes place. Parents
should have alternate arrangements for a child in
case parents cannot be home.
If the school system implements a weather plan, we will
do our best to communicate that information to you.
However, if there is a loss of power or Internet service
or the server has a high volume of activity, our
communication may be delayed. Your best source of
information will be the radio and TV stations: WSBTV, FOX
5, WXIA.
Stay
warm! |

| News
from the Front Office |
|
If
your child is absent from school (either excused or unexcused)
you do NOT need to call the front office. Simply send a
note to school upon your child's return, if it is
excused. If the absence is unexcused (vacation) you do
not need to send a note to school. Check the Briarlake
Handbook at the link above for details about absences.

| Better Seeking Science
Team |
Get ready for Briarlake's
annual Science Night on
January 19, 2010, at 6:30 pm, immediately following the
PTA meeting which begins at 6 pm. Join us for a
hands-on, fun-filled evening. We need parent
volunteers to man 'booths' at the science night on the
19th. We have a lot of great ideas but need the manpower
to pull it off well. You don't need any science
expertise, we will gladly train. Beth Rich and Susan

Ms. Goodwin. In the meantime, Mrs. Painter, a former DeKalb

| H1N1
Vaccine |
Reminder from The DeKalb County Board of
Health: Get Your Child Immunized for Novel H1N1
for the New Year! As we begin the New Year, the
DeKalb County School System wants to remind parents that
getting your children immunized with the novel H1N1 vaccine is
still the best way to help prevent the spread of flu virus
both at home and in the classroom. The health
department has an ample supply of the vaccine in both nasal
and injectable forms. The vaccine is safe, effective and you
do not need to be in a priority risk group to receive
it. Vaccinations are available at one of the DeKalb
County Board of Health's five locations, Monday through
Friday, between 8:15 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. The cost of
the vaccine is free, however, an administrative fee is charged
to Medicaid, Medicare and third party insurance. Bring your
child's shot record and your insurance card with you at the
time of service. For more information, call (404)
294-3700 or visit the DeKalb
Health Dept. Website.
