First Week of School
Greetings Briarlake Families,
Welcome back!
We hope everyone had a safe and happy holiday and are all ready for the second half of the year!  We have a lot going on so make sure the dates are on your calendar.

Weather Alert
With this winter's first chance of frozen precipitation just around the corner, we want to remind you to stay tuned to your local TV and radio stations for updates about school closings/delays/early dismissals.

For additional information about the Dekalb County School System's emergency weather plan, please click here.
Highlights:
Decisions about school closings/delays are normally broadcast on local radio and television stations by 6:15 a.m.

It is the parent's responsibility to monitor local news reports or to contact the local school to find out whether the school system has closed in the event of severe weather.

In the event of sudden emergencies, parents are responsible for their children if dismissal from schools takes place.  Parents should have alternate arrangements for a child in case parents cannot be home.

If the school system implements a weather plan, we will do our best to communicate that information to you.  However, if there is a loss of power or Internet service or the server has a high volume of activity, our communication may be delayed.  Your best source of information will be the radio and TV stations: WSBTV, FOX 5, WXIA.

Stay warm!
Report Cards
Report cards go home on Friday, January 8. Please report any errors or corrections to homeroom teacher by January 11.

ITBS and CogAT scores were sent home on Friday, Dec. 18. Please see homeroom teacher if you did not receive them.

Way to go!!

News from the Front Office
If your child is absent from school (either excused or unexcused) you do NOT need to call the front office.  Simply send a note to school upon your child's return, if it is excused.  If the absence is unexcused (vacation) you do not need to send a note to school. Check the Briarlake Handbook at the link above for details about absences.
Better Seeking Science Team
magnet
Get ready for Briarlake's annual Science Night on January 19, 2010, at 6:30 pm, immediately following the PTA meeting which begins at 6 pm.  Join us for a hands-on, fun-filled evening.

We need parent volunteers to man 'booths' at the science night on the 19th.  We have a lot of great ideas but need the manpower to pull it off well.  You don't need any science expertise, we will gladly train.

Music Teacher
Ms. Goodwin, part-time music teacher, has taken a full-time teaching position at Shamrock Middle School. Although we will miss Ms. Goodwin, we wish her well at her new school! Dr. Culbreath is currently working with Human Resources to replace Ms. Goodwin. In the meantime, Mrs. Painter, a former DeKalb County music teacher will be working with the students at Briarlake.
Beaver Bees
The Briarlake Spelling Bee will take place on Friday, January 8th, at 9:00am in the cafeteria.  The Briarlake Spelling Bee is for the top two spellers in each  4th and 5th grade class.  The winner of the Briarlake Spelling Bee will advance to the county Spelling Bee on Tuesday, January 26th, at Miller Grove High School. Good Luck Spelling Beavers!

The 6th Annual Anderson-Lowe Geography Bee will take place on Saturday, January 9th, at the Dekalb Elementary School of the Arts.  Briarlake has 2 teams participating this year.  Come out and support our Geography BEE-vers!  The Geography Bee starts at 8:30am.  Good luck Briarlake!

H1N1  Vaccine
Reminder from The DeKalb County Board of Health:  Get Your Child Immunized for Novel H1N1 for  the New Year!

As we begin the New Year, the DeKalb County School System wants to remind parents that getting your children immunized with the novel H1N1 vaccine is still the best way to help prevent the spread of flu virus both at home and in the classroom.

The health department has an ample supply of the vaccine in both nasal and injectable forms. The vaccine is safe, effective and you do not need to be in a priority risk group to receive it.  Vaccinations are available at one of the DeKalb County Board of Health's five locations, Monday through Friday, between 8:15 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

The cost of the vaccine is free, however, an administrative fee is charged to Medicaid, Medicare and third party insurance. Bring your child's shot record and your insurance card with you at the time of service.  For more information, call (404) 294-3700 or visit the DeKalb Health Dept. Website.
