RECESS AND HEALTHY HABITS
News: Recess to be topic at September
8th DeKalb BOE
meeting.
Many of you signed the petition supporting recess
in all DeKalb County schools last spring. We are
fortunate that Dr. Culbreath is very supportive of our
interests and incorporated 15 minutes of recess for
every Briarlake class every day this year which is
fantastic. Please let them know you appreciate this
change. There are still many schools in DeKalb
County that do not have this, but who have signed the
petition to support the idea as well. The issue of
recess will be on the agenda at the DeKalb Board of
Education meeting on September 8 at 6:00pm at Stephenson High
school in Stone Mountain. Citizens are invited
to speak at this meeting, they must request time by
going to the "Contact Us"
link then select the BOE as the email
recipient, and in the comments section say that you
would like to speak at the Sept. 8 meeting about recess
(or unstructured break
time).Even if you don't want to
speak, please plan to attend the
meeting. Healthy
Habits - School lunch reauthorization this
fall
The Briarlake Healthy Habits Program promotes
opportunities for fun and good health. Did you know the
Child Nutrition Act, which governs the National School
Lunch Program, is up for reauthorization this Fall? We
know our school cafeterias are doing a great job, but
receive such limited resources! If you're interested in
supporting a call for more resources and more fresh
foods in school lunches, check out the national "Time
for Lunch" campaign. On September 7th, potluck
lunch "eat-in" picnics are being held across the
country, including 8 Atlanta area locations such as
Piedmont Park, the Decatur Book Festival (September
6th), and Chastain Park. For more information, contact

Beaver Naming Contest
Here is how the process is
working:
Students Propose
Names. This past week, we have been collecting proposed
names for the Briarlake Beaver, our school mascot.
Teachers have preprinted naming forms for students
in their classes to fill out and put in the Beaver Box
located in the school lobby. Each student is
responsible for placing his or her naming form in the
Beaver Box before the end of the school day on Friday,
September 4, 2009.
Three
Names are Selected.
The
Beaver Naming Committee will select three (3) names from
all of the proposed names
submitted.
Students Vote on a Name.
Starting Tuesday, September 8, 2009, teachers
will have preprinted ballots on which their students can
vote for their favorite name from the three names
selected by the Committee. Each student is
responsible for placing his or her ballot in the Beaver
Box before the end of the school day on Friday,
September 11, 2009. Each student gets one
vote.
The Name
is Announced and the Namer Awarded a Prize.
The
winning name and namer will be announced at the PTA Ice
Cream Social on Tuesday, September 15, 2009!
Any questions should be submitted to
the Naming Committee Chairperson, Susan
Gouinlock (404)
634-2183.

YEARBOOK
Briarlake is fortunate
to have so many 'shutterbugs'.
When you
are taking any pictures of school related functions or
fun, remember the yearbook. We would love to have
a very diverse pool of pictures from which to choose
this year to make a dynamic, dazzling yearbook, but need
your help.
You can send any pictures to
Ms. Rich's email as an attachment. Just put
"yearbook" in the subject line. If you want to
include identifying data, that would be great too, but a
simple date, class, or child name is fine too. Thanks
for your
help!"

THE
FLU
Flu viruses are spread
mainly from person to person through respiratory
droplets produced when an infected person coughs or
sneezes, or by contact with contaminated objects, such
as occurs when a well person touches something that is
contaminated by flu droplets and the contaminated hands
are brought to the mouth, nose or eyes. (Flu virus
can survive minutes to hours on
surfaces).
The DeKalb County School
System is working closely with the DeKalb County Board
of Health (DBOH) and is receiving on-going guidance from
the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Georgia
Department of Community Health (DCH) and the Georgia
Department of Education (GaDOE). The school district
modifies its procedures in response to revised guidance
from these agencies.
What can you do to prevent the
flu?
The key is to stringently
follow sanitary measures to reduce the spread of
germs.
1. All persons are encouraged
to frequently wash their hands with soap and water or
use a hand sanitizer if soap and water are not
available. Encourage your child to wash their
hands often, especially after coughing or sneezing, and
to make use of hand
sanitizers.
2. Cover your cough/sneeze by
using a tissue (and properly discard) or your sleeve if
a tissue is not
available.
3. Do not share
personal items such as
drinks.
4. Parents/Guardians should
monitor your child for flu-like symptoms. Persons
who appear to have a flu-like illness will be sent
home.
5. Get
vaccinated. The CDC, DCH and DBOH encourage
citizens in high-risk groups, such as school-age
children to get vaccinated against seasonal and Novel
flu
viruses.
Those with flu-like illness should follow the
following exclusion period
recommendations:
1. Stay home for at
least 24 hours after they no longer have a fever,
without use of fever-reducing medicines and regardless
of whether or not they are using antiviral drugs.
2. Those who are
sick should stay in the home during this period, except
to seek necessary medical care, and should avoid contact
with others.
How can you help?
1. Keep your child
home if he/she has flu-like symptoms and follow the
guidelines provided above.
2. Support
prevention efforts by educating your child about proper
hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette. Discuss with
your child ways of staying healthy and the importance of
staying home when they are
sick.
3. Send in hand
sanitizer and Kleenex for your child's
classrooms if
needed.
Remember that there are many
illnesses with symptoms similar to those of influenza.
For example, a common cold or allergies can cause nasal
symptoms and cough. If you have questions about your
symptoms or feel you need to be seen because of
symptoms, contact your healthcare
provider.

SPIRIT
NIGHT -
What a great
turnout for our first Spirit Night!
Thank you to North
Druid Hills Chick-fil-a for hosting and Young Chefs
Academy for bringing cookies to decorate.
The children had a
wonderful time competing with Mrs. McLarty, Ms. Johnson,
and Mrs. Blackmore for BINGO prizes!

Picture Day
Picture Day was a huge
success; the students looked great!
You still
have time to purchase class pictures. Please send in
your class picture money, $12 each, check or cash
by 10/16/09 which is the class picture, re-take and make
up day.
If you do not have your
class picture form, just put your payment in an envelope
with your child's name and home room teacher. Make
checks payable to Lifetouch and label the
envelope: Nicole Spiro - PTA or Class
Pictures. Several envelopes were sent in
with no payment enclosed; Lifetouch will not make you a
class picture without payment up front.
For those of you who sent in money for the
class pictures we will plan to hold these checks until
the class pictures are actually taken on October 16th.
We need everyone to have an
individual picture taken as these are for the
yearbook. You do not have to purchase any
pictures.
Whether your
student missed picture day or not, please have them
picture ready on 10/16/09 for class pictures.
Thanks, Nicole
Spiro
