DEKALB COUNTY SCHOOLS ELIGIBILITY AND ENROLLMENT Children may attend DeKalb County schools if they live within the boundaries of the DeKalb School district, are between the ages of 4 and 21, and have not graduated from high school. Three-year old Special Education children may also receive services. To be eligible for first grade, a child must be six years old by September 1 of a given school year. Although state law does not require students to attend kindergarten, it is excellent preparation for first grade, and we encourage parents to enroll their children. To enter kindergarten, a child must be five years old no later than September 1 of a given school year.
Proof of Residency: All persons wishing to enroll a student in any DeKalb School must show proof of residency in the correct attendance area of DeKalb County. A current utility bill (gas or electricity only), a current lease, or current mortgage agreement are the only acceptable proofs of residency. Phone bills, water bills, personal checks, credit card bills, driver’s licenses, expired leases, or old closing statements are not adequate proofs of residency.
Birth Certificate: An original birth certificate with seal must be presented for new students entering pre-kindergarten, kindergarten and first grade. The hospital copy is not acceptable. If the child was born elsewhere in Georgia, call the Georgia State Office of Vital Records at 404-656-4901.
Immunization Forms:
-
Form #3231 - The immunization certificate is available from the DeKalb County Health Department or your private physician. Form #3231 is the only form acceptable for school entry and must be on file for every enrolled student. Form #3231 complies with current recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
-
Form #3300 - The eye, ear, and dental certificates are available from the health department or your private physician/dentist. An eye, ear, and dental certificate (Form #3300) must be on file for every enrolled student.
Social Security Number: No student will be denied enrollment in the DeKalb County School System for declining to provide her/his Social Security number or for declining to apply for such a number. A Social Security number will be requested, but providing it is voluntary. Appropriate forms are available for parents who either wish to make application or deny that request.
Transfer students whose records are complete at another DeKalb County school need only bring current proof of residency.
Promotional Information: A final report card, which shows promotion/retention placement information, is required.
International Students: Students who were born in another country or for whom English is not their first language must register at the International Center.
For additional information regarding registration for school, please go to the DeKalb county web site--newcomer tips.
