First week of school
Hello Beavers
Welcome back Beavers!
We are off to a fabulous start! Ask your child if they are having fun playing on our new playground?
A few reminders as we all get back in the swing of things:
  • If you did not pay your PTA membership dues at Open House please email Christy Van Horn at christyvanhorn@mindspring.com .  We kindly ask that each adult in the home join the PTA.  $5 per adult.
  • There are plenty of planners/agendas, spelling dictionaries and                t-shirts for sale in the school store.  $5 a piece.
  • We have ordered additional t-shirts in YS, YM and AS, AM and they will be available by curriculum night.  Keep in mind that children grow a lot, so a larger size now, may also fit in the spring.  Good investment.
  •  Drive-thru (formerly carpool) typically takes about 2 weeks to start running smoothly.  We ask for your patience and understanding as buses learn their routes, teachers learn which students are riding or walking, and parents learn the ropes.
  • All correspondence for Heather Leahy, PTA treasurer, should go in the "treasurer's box" in the front office, not in the PTA box in the teacher lounge.  This includes all check requests, check reimbursements, invoices and bills.
What's new?  Check out all the details below.

Entry to School
After the summer's break-in, the county installed a new front door entry system. This new system is a bit tricky.
To obtain entry when the front doors are locked, you must push the bell-button on the LEFT of the double doors, await confirmation from the office by speaker, listen for a click,& then quickly open the LEFT door.
The office staff does not have a remote-door- opener any more, so please be patient.

Quote of the Week
"A school system without parents at its foundation is just like a bucket with a hole in it"...

Rev. Jesse Jackson
Great American fundraiser (formerly Sally Foster)

Make a Splash with Great American!
Our newest fundraiser, Great American, is already making a splash! The sale has officially begun and runs through September 2nd. Great American features something for everyone: unique gift wrap and food items, a wide selection of quality holiday and home products -- and introducing a new offering this year...the Jewelry Collection!
Please remember to have your child turn in their participation sheet starting next Monday, August 16th for eligibility to receive a rubber duckie keychain.  Keychains will be delivered to all participating students on Fridays during the sale.
Additional Thank You Prizes:

Sell 10 items, select a free bonus product from either catalog (put item number of your choice in the goal prize box on the order form)
A ride on the fabulous Fur Bus - for every student selling $150 or more.
A class party - for the class with the most students participating (selling at least 1 item)
Movie Tavern gift card for the two top selling students

If you did not receive a Great American packet during open house one will be sent home with your child this week.  Additional forms can be found in the office.
Order forms are due September 2nd (Please write ONE check for your student's entire catalog order, payable to Briarlake PTA)
Orders will be ready for pickup on October 15th (they'll go home with your student)

Safe Routes to School
Thank you everyone who got the school year off on the right foot by walking to or from school.  Did you notice our new walking path from Briarlake road around the back of the playground/parking lot and up to school behind the cafeteria?  If you haven't walked to or from school yet, please give it a try.  Studies show that children who walk to school are better behaved and perform better in school.  And you find out the most information about your child's day as you walk home together.

Even if you can't walk all the way from home, you can still get the benefit of walking by parking on a neighborhood street and walking from there.  On Monday, we counted 67 cars lined up in the afternoon drive thru line before the line even began to move!  If you park on Silvastone and walk to school, it will take two minutes each way.  This is much faster than waiting in a line of cars, and much better for the environment.  For those of you who do wait in your cars, thank you for following the drive thru line rules and not using cell phones or texting while your car is on.  We are looking forward to seeing you out of your car!
School Improvement Survery
As part of our school improvement efforts we have created a short survey on Survey Monkey that we would like all of our families to complete.  Each family can complete it once regardless of how many children they have attending Briarlake.  We are asking that  parents complete it within 1 week.  The results will be compiled and used as we focus on ways we can improve.   We will identify the results in our 2010-2011 Consolidated School Improvement Plan.
Thank you!
Dr. Culbreath

We will not be sending home a hard copy as this would invalidate the data.  Don't miss this opportunity to be heard!
